Elementary School

What was your life like back in elementary school? How would you have described yourself in elementary? Were you carefree? A worry-wart? Energetic? Shy? The top of your class? Have a lot of friends? Obnoxious?

  1. Life seemed pretty ok back in elementary school...although I look back in embarrassment sometimes. All I have to say is that luckily we grow out of a lot of phases...and some we don't.

I was decent in school, grade-wise. I actually switched friends often (except Shannyn Shaw who wasn't didn't attend the same school as me). I had lots of close friends that were in the "popular group" although I definitely never considered myself popular. They were super smart, super athletic, and super cute...I was only average (not to put myself down, but as truth). I actually think I didn't fit in well with that crowd and switched friends often for that reason.

I was completely boy crazy...and chased them around the playground. I never was good at fashion. I was generally nice (except to those poor boys I chased around) and smart. I worried about life, my future, and anything...as I always have and probably always will.

  2. Elementary school...let's see...that seems so long ago for me. I would say that I was a combination of things. I was shy, especially around adults. And I always worried about moving up to the next grade thinking it was going to be unbearable because Emily (my older sister) was always telling me how incredibly hard it was and how I was going to have hours of homework every night. But, I would say I was a good student. I didn't really get in trouble much (except in second grade when Ms. Siler moved be because me and Ronnie Cooper were talking too much). I had a good amount of friends and very few enemies (only the bullies that were basically mean to everyone...John Steiner comes to mind). I do remember that back then, there were really no other asian kids, so there were always kids that would come up to me and make an "oriental" face by using their fingers to make their eyes into small slits. It was probably in an effort to tease me about my differences, but it really never affected me. I'm pretty sure most of the time I just laughed it off. Truthfully, there were lots of times I completely forgot I was asian anyway.

In elementary, I wasn't all that boy crazy. I had some good friends that were boys, but I didn't "love" them. I liked spending recesses playing chinese jump rope, double dutch, kick soccer and just running around. I did get Presidential physical fitness. I also thought math was by best subject (which changed as soon as junior high approached). Overall, I would say I was just your normal, average kid.

  3. I don't remember elementary that well. I didn't have many real good friends. I switched schools in the middle of 5th grade and that doesn't leave a ton of time to make real good friends. I remember passing notes that said things like, "Beto, you're the bestest bestest bestest bestest . . . friend. Love, Sako." Actually, I'm not sure that was my name. My friend April Sperry and I had strange names for each other.

I remember my 5th and 6th grade teacher Mr. Reynolds carrying my backpack for me because I would take a lot of my books home to finish my homework. I was not the fastest of workers but I worked hard and finished my homework at home.

I was pretty shy as far as talking to my peers but I don't ever remember being that shy around my teachers or most adults. Bob Hoki, of course, being an exeption.

I was always into getting rewards. I remember that I won one of the two special certificates with scholarship money at my elementary graduation.

The last thing I remember was being very flexible. I would do gymnastics moves out on the playground: backbends, reaching my feet to my head backwards, and cartwheels. I took tap dance and gymnastics.

  4. Elementary school was a LONG time ago! I do remember several of my teachers and what we did though. I don't think there was kindergarten but in first grade we took a blanket to sleep on and took a nap. I was pretty academic but also had lots of friends. I attended Hillview Elemntary school which is still there!

We used to have after school Primary on a weekday so we could walk to the church since it was right next door to the school.

I think it was in sixth grade our teacher said our math homework for the year was to finish the math book problems. I finished it by Christmas and didn't really have any homework the rest of the year.

At recess we played the normal: dodgeball, jacks, tetherball, playgound equpment, baseball, jumprope, etc.

When I was in the sixth grade also I kind of liked a boy named Mike. We had a pretemd wedding or something like that. Then we moved after that. When Calvin went on a mission he went to the same mission on the same day and I saw him at the airport. When he got on the airplane he called out, "So who knows Julie Namba?"
