I've had a really close relationship with my mom probably since junior high or high school. My friends always loved her because she always made cookies and treats for them and most of them would come over to my house knowing that anything in the fridge was available for eating. Mom was just like that, loved feeding people and giving to people. Her favorite callings are probably the ones she gets to serve others the most in such as in the RS presidency at the Bennion Care Center, YW adviser, and missionary for the humanitarian center.
I have a lot of favorite memories with her, and I'm not sure if I have one specifically to share. For some reason when I think of memories with my mom, it's always while driving in the car. We'd listen to oldies music, talk about boys or school or life, and we'd just go run errands. That was probably my favorite, just having conversations with her. She always felt like one of my best friends.
The only other memory that sticks out in my mind was one trip to CA. I had the idea to visit every temple we could along the way, and she LOVED that idea. We mapped out how to get to all the temples we could during our drive and that was a great experience. We had always made it part of our vacation planning to include the nearest temple from our destination. Those are probably some of my favorite memories that I would like to keep doing with my family.
I would describe my mom as a woman with a lot of compassion and charity. She is always looking out for the needs of others whether it is at an old folk's home or the humanitarian center. She is very thoughtful and always thinks of others before herself. She is also an incredible "deal-finder." I learned all of my bargain shopping ways from her coupon clipping, sale shopping, and yard saling. She is also an amazing cook and always kept us well fed growing up...and even now!
One of the greatest memories I have of my mom was one time when I was upset about something and my mom came to talk to me about it. I wasn't really very forthcoming (and I don't even remember what it was about). But in that conversation, I remember her saying that out of everyone in the family, I reminded her most of herself. I remember feeling flattered that she would say such a thing because I always loved all her great qualities.
Of course, I will always love the yard saling memories with my mom. Even when we don't go together, it's always fun to come over and share our purchases and amazing deals with each other.
Mom always spoke from her heart which made her very spiritual. She always saw through my exterior to my heart too. Like when she enrolled me in Boys Christian League. We always had a spiritual thought before we played baseball. It taught me good moral principles in bite sized, age appropriate, weekly thoughts. She could see that I loved to go even though as she said it, "It was like pulling teeth" to get me to go. She knew that once I got there, I loved it. So every week, she dragged me there in spite of vigorous protests. I always wanted to do whatever I was doing instead of considering how much I loved baseball.
Most of what I would say about my mother has already been said. A memory to go along with her charity is the Bennion Care Center. I remember going to the different rooms with her. She would always check with the ladies and make sure that they were plenty warm and had lap quilts if they needed. I also remember giving cinnamon rolls to the neighbors. My mother was also good at getting me to laugh. I remember when I would be in a bad mood my mom would brighten up my day by pretending her fingers were birds and telling me that they would perch on my lips if they were pouting.
My mom has always been there for me. She has always been hardworking and tried to do whatever to make her life better.
Lately I have been glad that we have been able to spend time with each other going on trips such as Germany, Paris, Canada, and the eastern U.S. It has also been fun to go on family vacations with her. Also it was really rewarding to see her at her 80th birthday party because she really seemed to enjoy it.
