High School

What extra curricular activities were you involved in during high school?

  1. In high school I was involved in a lot of choirs. I sang all through high school and my senior year I was in Madrigals. Also, during all years (except my senior year) I was on the volleyball team. My junior year was spent mostly on the bench due to injury to my ankle. So for my senior year I decided to just forget volleyball. But instead my senior year I was in our high school musical, "Anything Goes". But in school I was always involved with things like dances, institute, and other activities.

  2. When I was in high school I was mostly involved in seminary. When I was a senior I was the Granger High School seminary historian and I also worked parttime for the seminary as a secretary after school. As a sidenote, when I was in high school a few of us girls (around 6 as I recall) formed our own club called the FSA (Future Spinsters of America). We had a great time doing things together like having sleepovers and going to Francesco's for pizza.

  3. At Taylorsville High School, I was in a few school clubs like MESA Club (Math, Engineering, Science), Spanish Club and FBLA...however, I wouldn't say I put much effort into them. I spent most of my time doing things on Seminary Council my senior year.

  4. I was involved in swimming all 4 years of High School. I was a captian of the girls swim team my senior year and enjoyed competeting at state competition as well. Also, was involved in seminary, cross country, tracks, Choir, MESA, FBLA, DECA, National Honor Society, and school musicals. My Senior year I was involved in Traveling and Tourism Program and Madrigals on top of everything else. I spent most of my lunch hours attending practices and meetings. Before and after school was filled with practices, competition, and performances as well. I loved being busy all the time and missing classes.

  5. I was a band geek for sure. I was involved in Pep band, the musical pit, and symphonic band. I was also the vice president of the Key club, a service club, and a member of the National Honor Society. Oh yeah, I was also in the Japanese club for a while, although I really don't remember much now.

  6. Prior to high school: When I was very young living in Duarte before school, I tied a rope around JoDell's neck to swing her on the swing. My mother said, "JoDell was turning blue when she ran out to untie her." We lived on a busy (traffic) corner. I took the jelly jars my mother had been saving for some time for drinking glasses and lined them across the street lane to watch cars run over them.

In the 4th grade in Glendora, we were lining up at the end of recess to return to class. I picked up an orange peel and attempted to throw it into the trash can. It past by the teacher's head and I was sent to the principal's office. I was afraid to see him, so I lied to the secretary and just said I was sent to the sit in the office.

In 6th grade in Centralia I tackled an 8th grade girl while playing coed flag football. Not too cool.

All of us at Fountain Elementary had an understanding with a grocery store owner. We went behind the counter, got candy, and left our money at the counter. One day I took a 1 cent piece of candy and left without paying. I felt guilty for a whole year until I left a penny on the counter without getting any candy.

I had an interest in Judo while at Fountain Valley Elementary and an active imagination. I told JoDell that if she would run toward me, I could grab her arm and flip her onto her back without hurting her. She ran toward me, I stuck out my foot to get her leaning forward, but missed her hand. She did a face plant and ended up with two black eyes.

I was over-zealous when it came to my studies. I often became upset when my sisters playng made noise in the house that bothered my study. They taunted me by opening the door to my room. I rigged up several fishing weights above my room door to drop on an intruder's head. It worked and mother taught me a wonderful lesson when she said, "I would rather hear the sound of happiness than sad crying."

I was only recognized twice for my academic achievements in elementary school. I won the Fountain Valley Elementary School spelling bee in 7th grade.

The spelling was not a total fluke, but some of the students before me were having trouble spelling 'their', and the person next to me asked me how to spell it. I knew the 2 spellings, but not which spelling to use, I told him and he spelled it incorrectly the way I told him. I spelled it correctly. I spelled the rest of words correctly and won. A teacher wanted me to spell one extra word, "Santa Claus", which I did easily. My name was added to a plaque that hung in the school for years.

When the 8th grade teacher called it to the attention of the class that I had ace'd several math quizzes in a row, I failed the next several quizzes. I did much better when not put in the spotlight.

High School: I was sent the vice principal's office when I didn't ride the booster bus home from an away football game. My friends convinced me that they did it all the time. I just had to have someone say, "Here!" when my name was called. The vice principal had only to say that he had never in his career had a Japanese American student sent to his office. I left his office feeling like the scum of my Japanese heritage.
